Curtis Codrington has been visiting Muamba in intensive care since the player collapsed during Saturday's match at Tottenham.
After speaking to Muamba's family on Monday, Codrington revealed his friend has spoken "minimal words in English and French, which is better than nothing."
Bolton tonight confirmed the improvement in his condition, revealing that the player has been able to "recognise family members and respond to questions appropriately".
Muamba's fiance Shauna tweeted: "All your prayers are working people thank u so so much. Every prayer makes him stronger. To God be the glory."
Medical staff took two hours to get Muamba's heart working again but doctors revealed there had been further small reasons for optimism.
A joint statement released by Bolton and the hospital earlier today said: "Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital, where today he is showing small signs of improvement.
"His heart is now beating without the help of medication and he is also moving his arms and his legs.
"However, his long-term prognosis will remain unclear for some time.
"He is still critically ill and will continue to be closely monitored and treated by staff in the London Chest Hospital's intensive care unit."
Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole and QPR winger Shaun Wright-Phillips both visited Muamba in hospital this afternoon.
